GESAFFELSTEIN PODCAST FOR CLASHMUSIC.COM

One of our top picks to watch in 2011 provides this week’s podcast – enigmatic French producer Gesaffelstein, demonstrating why we flagged him as a face to remember.

One of the most innovative names in the often-stagnant electro-techno sphere, Gesaffelstein – real name Mike Levy – keeps a relatively low-profile, with only a handful of releases (most recently on Tiga’s Turbo label) but when they hit as hard as the frantic, lasered pulse of ‘Variations’ or the swirling, Hacker-esque ‘Selected Faces’, a handful is all you need.

His Clash mix begins with some uncharacteristically subtle tones (reminiscent of fellow countrymen Zombie Zombie’s creeping Krautrock synths), gradually working its way through minimal club sounds before exploring classic Parisian disco and electro from the likes of Krikor, and then going full-pelt and filthy, with deep, jagged techno from Pan Tone and Bukaddor & Fishbeck

Other artists in Gesaffelstein’s 60 minutes include Magda, an Applebim and Ramadanman collaboration (edited up by Carl Craig) and none other than Kraftwerk.

A selection of tunes which demonstrate the true range and depth of electro, all weaved together by a subtly masterful hand. Keep watching Gesaffelstein, more brilliance is sure to come
